About SAGA

SAGA has a rich history. Its origins stretch back to 1915 when a group of printmakers founded the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. The following year, their first exhibit was at the Brooklyn Museum. In 1952 (several names changes later) the Society adopted its present title to reflect the all-inclusive membership which practices a full range of printmaking processes.

Mary Cassatt, Joseph Pennell, John Marin, Childe Hassam and John Taylor Arms were early exhibitors of SAGA. Over the years the membership has included most of America's foremost printmakers. Membership in the Society enables artists to show their work in New York City through important exhibitions with substantial awards. Many purchase awards have been acquired by major museum collections in the United States.

SAGA has long reflected the growth and changes taking place in printmaking as well as transformations in the larger world of art. The high standards of SAGA are perpetuated in national exhibitions which continue to expose the public to the best of American printmaking. (More about SAGA history)

SAGA Activities

SAGA is a service organization and has sponsored national and international exhibitions since 1922. Other activities include demonstrations and service events, such as a symposium on health hazards in the arts. SAGA traveling exhibitions have been shown in many museums and universities. Some exhibitions have circulated internationally under the auspices of the United States Information Agency.

SAGA keeps its members informed of activities through a newsletter, SAGAzine, which lists exhibition opportunities, member activities and other items of interest to printmakers.

Membership in SAGA

The membership jury consists of SAGA Council members. Any fine art printmaker interested in becoming an active member of SAGA is invited to send personal one-page résumé and portfolio of 10 images. The images may be either JPEGs / TIFFs on a CD or 35mm slides in a slide sheet. Send to:

The online SAGA Portfolio is a new educational effort by SAGA. Each SAGA member in good standing is invited to submit a recent print image and current contact information.
Through the SAGA Portfolio, viewers will be able to see images of current prints in a wide variety of media, concepts, and styles. SAGA endorses the general concept of presenting creative works by its members, but the SAGA Portfolio may not be used to promote sales or otherwise engage in commerce.
Copyrights are reserved by the individual artists. For specific information about any artist, print, or copyright, please contact the artist directly.
